More on Pete Collins

From John Bevan (OC PI Flt 1981 to 84)

Hi Chris,

Just re-entered my details after reading about Pete Collins. How very sad! I flew with him in the T bird as a jolly on the final sorties of the day after setting the targets out in the sticks during a local exercise using the RIC vehicles supported by Blowpipe and Rapier units. I have to say, we passed the targets by as he missed the location but we got jumped by an RF-4 from Wildenrath and Pete then lost me completely as he went ultra low level along valleys and between trees banging my bone dome left and right as he demonstrated what a real fighter pilot did!  I remember that trip in serious detail…. Pete however swore me to secrecy but I’m sure he won’t mind me telling the story as he loved flying and, given my experience on that trip, he has to be remembered as awesome!

RIP Pete.

To Geoff Quick…. I know a lot of our ilk are done and dusted mate, but I’m still around…… JB

Hi John, Glad to hear it! I’m sitting by the seaside enjoying my dotage here in Tanzania. E-mail harakahouse@gmail.com. I would like to get together some light hearted input from the RIC in to the squadron memoirs before we all go gaga. 4sqn. O.C.P.I.flight was a superb job, even more so in the field. Each site had its identity and as new boys 6 was different. Steve Jennings was the superb 6 site site boss, but probably a bit bemused on the first time in the field, when taking visitors to the (invented ) minor admin problem ,whilst the lads cheered us on. I hasten to add ,of course ,that it was all “Ham” acting on our part to help build up the site’s individuality. (Subsequently proved on Taceval!)

Steve Jennings was the excellent 6 site boss, but probably a bit bemused on the first time in the field, when taking visitors to his site RIC, he found the Camp Commandant Rock ( ie. Bunny Abbott) rolling in the dust scrapping with his RIC boss over some (invented ) minor admin problem ,whilst the lads cheered us on. I hasten to add ,of course ,that it was all “Ham” acting on our part to help build up the site’s individuality. (Subsequently proved on Taceval!)
