Hello Chris,
Could you kindly walk me through the process of joining the Harrier Force Association. Unfortunately, once again, I am fighting the latest bout of the dreaded cancer and am under going a very very aggressive bout of chemotherapy sessions. I would however like to attend the bash on the 16th of July, all things being equal. I will try and manipulate the medical types to either zap me pre the 16th of July or post the 16th of July. Look forward to hearing from you in the not too distant future.
Best Regards,
Mo Tiwana.

It is 1972 and Germany and the World are all hyped up about the Olympics being held in Munich. Alas, there is a terrorist attack on the athletes and several Israeli atheletes are killed by these terrorists. Then according to the intelligence reports, it is believed that the next target will be a NATO base. So the MOD in their infinte wisdom decides to fly in squadrons of Rock-Apes to ensure that the safety and security of RAF bases in Germany is not compromised. For our share, we managed to get 2 Field Squadron to look after our safety and security at RAF Wildenrath !!! The Squadron Commander of 2 Field Squadron commandered the guard room upon his arrival, from where he was to direct his Rock-Apes to ensure that the security of RAF Wildenrath was not compromised. All was well, until one day we had a Harrier come down with an engine change. The Station Commander, who by then was Group Captain George Black, decided that this engine change should be carried out under field conditions and the event photgraphed for posterity. So we towed the crippled Harrier to the revetments and prepared it for an engine change under the field conditions. In the mean time, Flt.Sgt. Jim Marshall had contacted N.C.O. i/c photo section and told him of our plan and that a photographer should be present with his state of the art Rollieflex camera to photograph the event. Eventually, we were all ready to pull this very poor sick Harrier apart and all the dignitaries, who had to be there, were present, except the Station Photo-g. After waiting for him patiently for some time, the Station Commander asked where was this phot-g? The Photo section was called and they said that he had already left the Photo Section and should be on site any minute.Another fort-five minutes went by, still no sign of the Photo-g. By this time the Staion Commander was getting a litle bit agitated ( there were no mobile phones in those days)!!!! Eventually, about an hour and a half later a seach party was sent out to find this photo-g. They finally found this poor photo-g in a very very poor state in the guard room. What had transpired was that after the Station Commander's orders, this poor photo-g was detailed to walk over to the 4 Sqn hanger, with his Rollieflex camera and additional roles of films and declare his availability. Unfortunately, for him, the poor guy got picked up by the Rock-Apes who accused him of being a Russian spy. They took his camera away from him and un-reeled all his films and then beat him up,tore his shirt up and took his socks and shoes away. After they finished with him, they then bundled him up from head to toe in a gunny-sack, threw him in the back of their Land-Rover, drove him to the guard room and presented him to their Squadron Commander, who then reverted to his Gestapo type interrogation mode. By the time we found the poor photo-g, he had been beaten up, all his clothing torn and stripped, his camera equipment destroyed, a jibbering wreck, and this was done by our own side!!!! To say that the Staion Commander and the Boss were not impressed by the resident Rock-Apes is an under-statement. It could only happen on 4 Sqn !!!

I think the new forums are working properly now. They're being run under bbPress which intergrates well with Wordpress, the web software that runs this website.

The main difference, and the reason I changed it over, is that once you are logged into Fourfax you should be automatically logged into the Forums as well. If it doesn't work, try logging out and in again and send me an email so I can research the snag.

During summer of 1971, we were once again, bound for Deci. As usual, while we were there, a great deal of effort was being put into keeping the troops occupied during the weekends. There used to be a PSI bus at the station called the "SARDO VOYAGER". The visiting squadron could hire it for a day with the driver to go sight seeing. This particular weekend, not to be any different, we hired the Sardo Voyager to go sight seeing some of the Grottos on the south west of the island. All was well until the return journey from the Grottos, when a strange knocking noise started to emanate from the engine compartment of the Sardo Voyager. Another couple of miles of driving, the low oil pressure light illuminated and the engine stalled. With all the technical expertise available on the Sardo Voyger, a verdict of low oil quantity was reached. As luck would have it, we had broken down abeam an oil refinery !!! So your truly volunteered to go to the oil refinery and see if I could get a gallon of oil from them. After all, they had millions of gallons of oil there. Surely they could spare a gallon.I was turned away unceremoniously with a sign language to tell me that there was an Agip petrol station two kms down the road. Off I went to this Agip petrol station and purchased a gallon of oil and walked back to the Sardo Voyger. Unfortunately, after pouring the gallon of oil in the Sardo Voyger's engine, the engine did not want to start. I then volunteered to hitch a ride to Cagliari and Poeto and see if I could get a rescue. After walking 3 or 4 kms. I was picked up by a sardinian family and driven all the way to the Bowmans club in Poeto. I managed to track down the SNCO i/c MTSS and told him of our plight. Unfortunately, he was less than helpful. I then knocked on the door of O.C. Ops' house and explained the situation to him. He told me that I could borrow his long wheeled base land rover, but he had no tow rope. I also asked the O.C. Ops if he could somehow get a message to the Boss about our predicament, which he assured me that he would. Undeterred by that, I took possession of the land rover and drove to the Italian Navy base on the Via Roma in Cagliari. At the Italian Naval base, I managed to seek out the Duty Officer and using pidgeon English and sign language got him to give me a length of the hawser. I then drove out to the Sardo Voyger as fast as I could because by now it was dark. I got there in one piece and hooked up the Sardo Voyger and started the tow back to Deci. We couldn't have driven more than 15 kms when the Boss with Sqn.Ldr. King and Sqn.Ldr. Thomas turned up in three long wheel base landrovers for the rescue. We abandoned the Sardo Voyger and everybody got into the three land rovers and were driven back to Deci. I drove O.C. Ops land Rover back to his house in Poeto and caught the courtesy bus back to Deci.
When we were to redeploy to Deci again in 1972, at the pre-deployment briefing by Sqn. Ldr. King, he made a point of mentioning and I quote, "Mo, for your information they have assured me that the Sardo Voyger is fully serviceable," unquote. It brought a smile to my face. As promised, we had no problems with the Sardo Voyger this deployment.

Hi,

I posted a picture of 4 squadron sitting between two hunters at Gutersloh 1968. After much experimentation to get the smallest file which would still allow users to zoom in and identify individuals in the photo. I posted a file of 525Kb.

I now see it in the Hunter album 2797bytes 150x 67 pixel! What's the point? You may as well delete the file. You cannot view 58 people and two aircraft at 150x67 pixels. Same applies to the photo of 4 squadron Hunter "Kilo".

Regards,

I received this query from Jaap Woortman, a member of the Study Group Airwar 1939-1945
http://www.airwar39-45.nl

At October 29th, 1944, when No.4 RAF Sqn. was stationed at B.70 Deurne-Antwerp(Belgium), F/L D.C.Wilkins RAF 101007, had to do a recce to Hengelo(Netherlands) area in his Spitfire IX PL953. During this sortie he was attacked by a Me 262 of Kdo.Nowotny. The Me 262 was flown by Ltn. Alfred Schreiber. The attack took place over the Nordhorn (Germany) area. During the attack the Me 262 hit (rammed) the Spitfire. The Me 262 pilot had to bail out and the Me 262 made a crash at Tubbergen (Netherlands). F/Lt Wilkins flew back home. It is not possible to learn from his communication with Deurne a/f that he knew that he was hit by the Me 262. Information from ORB No.4 Sqn. form 540. He made a forced-landing over enemy territory north of Tilburg (Netherlands). He was taken POW by the Germans.

My questions are:
- Does someone know the take-off time of F/L D.C.Wilkins from B.70 Deurne? The information should be at the ORB of No.4 Sqn. Form 541 of that day.
- Does someone know where and at what time F/Lt Wilkins made his landing?
- Is Mr. D.C.Wilkins still alive and a member of the No.4 Sqn. Ass.?

(No, he's not a member - Chris)

Does anybody have any knowledge of this incident or suggestions as to where Jaap should look?

As you know, the Berlin Airlift represents one of the most dramatic humanitarian efforts of the post-war era and was a strikingly successful example of British and American co-operation. It was also an event which made a major contribution to turning a WWII enemy into a Cold War ally.

Hello all, I was kindly given a log in as an "associate member" because I am researching Hunter F.6s with RAFG. I have a question and maybe some kind soul out there has the answer. The pictures I have seen all show 4 Sqn. F.6s with the squadron emblem on the nose and the lightning bolt bars on either side of it but none on the fuselage either side of the roundel.

The F.4s of 4 Sqn. had the emblem on the nose without bars on either side but did have the bars on either side of the fuselage roundel. Example here:

http://www.rafjever.org/4sqnpic050.htm

Later pics of F.10s show both bars around the emblem and the fuselage roundel but at the top of the roundel instead of in the middle as on F.4s.

My question is this: when did the squadron begin to apply the bars around the top of the fuselage roundel as seen on F.10s? In particular, was it ever applied to F.6s or was it something new for F.10s? I know I am asking a question about an obscure detail in appearance almost 50 years ago, but I figure it is worth a shot. Any pictures of F.6s from 4 Sqn. may be helpful. I don't have any that were not taken in 57 or 58, so maybe a later F.6 picture may answer my question. In any event, thanks for the invitation to research the site, the picture gallery is brilliant and very helpful for my purposes.

Cheers,
Jack

Does anyone out there have a photo of the hanger door at Leewarden in 93 which has to go down as the biggest Sqn zap in history, or a photo of Charlie Mc Ilroy's face the night we set fire to the officers' piano outside 323 Sqns line hut the night before their mess function after we carted it all the way from Gut for them?

I remember all the Sqd Silver on display in the Crew Room upstairs in the hanger at Gutersloh. Also there was a mechanical Automated Whisky Dispenser - a rear invention. Is it beyond the realm of hope that the Official Sqd Photo is there somewhere?

I think the occasion was, we had just won the Sassoon Trophy. It had to be between 1967 and 1969. We put two FR10

I've had an e-mail from Simon Glancey <info@wwrgallery.co.uk> who wrote:

Hello there. I was recently at a dig of a IV Sqn Mustang I AG617 which crashed in Northumberland on 19th February 1943. I wish to produce a profile illustration of this plane, and wondered if it was possible to find out what code letter(s) it carried in Feb 43. Is this something you may be able to help with, or could you point me in to soemone else who may be able to help? Many thanks, Simon Glancey

If anyone has information on this could they reply to Simon and also post it here?

I hope this letter is appropriate for this Forum

I have spent over 25 years researching the history, development and use of assisted aircrew escape systems. Part of the project involves compiling a comprehensive listing of as many ejections in the world as possible. To date I have reference to approximately 8,000 ejections since 1942 with nearly 30 confirmed Luftwaffe ejections and another 30 possibles.

I am trying, where possible to personally contact ejectees or witnesses to the ejections, so that I can obtain their memories of the period prior to, during and post the ejection and a photograph of the ejectee about the period of their ejection.

I also keep an up to date ejection chronicle on recent ejections on my website.

I would be very grateful if any of your members who have ejected, or are colleagues or relatives of ejectees could contact me either on the forum - or to prevent clogging up the Forum threads off line at my email below.

I want to make clear, that I am not connected with any military, technical, government, nor aeromedical establishment, but a civilian with a passion for aviation history and preserving the memory of all those involved in assisted aircrew escape systems.

Sincere thanks for reading this request

With respect
