Update from Kevin Marsh

Hi Chris, I thought I owed you an update for the fourfax website.

The day after I handed over Command of IV Sqn in June, I flew out from RAF Brize Norton to Kandahar Airfield, Afghanistan where I am currently serving as Chief of Staff (Operations) at 904 Expeditionary Air Wing.

IV Sqn Painting Kandahar

IV Sqn Painting Kandahar

Kandahar Airfield (or KAF as it is known by many) has changed quite a bit since the Harriers operated here, but some things such as the Boardwalk and the Poo Pond have not changed a great deal! 904 EAW supports UK detachments of Tornado GR4, C130J Hercs, BAe-146 Mk3 (a brand new UOR transport version flown by 32(TR) Sqn) and UK Reapers. Although the role has not changed a great deal, but with transition to the Afghans in full swing, the challenges faced by everyone on Op HERRICK has changed somewhat.

I was surprised that I could find little evidence and history of the Harrier era in and around 904 EAW’s building, and although there are many concrete barriers festooned with Tornado sqn art, no one knew of any Harrier paintings. As part of my arrivals, I visited the UK Reapers and to my surprise I found 7 concrete blocks covered in Harrier det art being used as a shelter! I’ve attached photos of the two IV Sqn ones, which I hope will bring back memories to some of you.

My plan is to rescue these pieces of history sometime in the next few weeks and place them in the 904 EAW compound so that they can be on display. I will post an update of when this happens – I am hoping to get BFBS and the RAF News to cover the event.

I’m not sure that they will ever make it to the UK, but hopefully their images will be preserved in some way.

Comments Working Again

Pete Mears reported to me some time ago that comments weren’t working. Logged in users trying to comment saw their comments disappearing into the great bit-bucket in the sky.

I’m pleased to report that I’ve resolved the issue and comments are now working again – get typing!

Rob Hartley’s 50th Birthday Presentation

From Ade Bushell:

When Rob Hartley was a “young” FLM on 4 Squadron back in April 1982, he concreted his name in the annals of the squadron history by trying to drive a long-wheel base land-rover around the blast-wall outside HAS 6 at RAF Gutersloh.

He got about half-way around when disaster struck and the land-rover succumbed to gravity. Normally, this kind of incident can go unnoticed, unfortunately for Rob, he had 8 other Line FLM’s in the land-rover with him.

Needless to say we never let a “get together” go by without reminding him of the day he nearly killed off an entire shift of “Linnies.”

And so it proved at his 50th birthday.

Attached are a couple of photos of the April 1982 “Wall of Death” incident.

IV(R) Squadron – Change of Command 13 June 2013

From Wg Cdr Kev Marsh:

Today is my last as Officer Commanding IV(R) Squadron. Tomorrow my successor, Wing Commander Dan Beard, will formally take Command of IV(R) Squadron. Today also marks the graduation of the first students from the Hawk T2 in front of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Stephen Dalton and I am very proud to announce that all 4 members of Course 001 will be going on to fly the Typhoon.

My time at RAF Valley flying the Hawk T2 has been amazing and has gone far too quickly. I have been extremely proud and honoured to have played a small part in the long and distinguished history of IV Squadron and I am sure that the Squadron will go from strength to strength. There have been so many highlights in my tour to choose from, but three really stand out: the Squadron Stand-up parade in November 11 in 60mph winds(!), the 27 aircraft EiiR flypast in May 2012 and, of course, the IV Centenary in September 2012.

I would like to formally thank you for your support to the Squadron and to me. May I wish you all the best for the future and I hope to meet you again at future Squadron reunions!

HEAR 3 – Stamford

Better late than never, some photos from HEAR3 (Harrier Engineer Annual Reunion – 3) held at Stamford earlier in the year.

From Ade Bushell:

Here are a couple of photos from the HEAR3 do in Stamford 2013. The turnout by ex-4 Sqn linnies from the early 1980’s was exceptional. Billy Purse was unable to attend but he is in the process of having Taff Evans 4 Squadron shirt framed and mounted, and i believe it will then be presented to Taff’s family.

“In futurum videre ” Four to the core!

HFA Get-Together London 28 June

From Ben Sargent:

For those who have already committed and for those still negotiating pink-chits, here’s a quick reminder of the planned get together. I hope you can make the time to come along and help kick this off as an annual get together in a similar vein to a number of the other forces. As well as an excuse to hang-out with fellow Harrier-mates (what more reason do you need), it is summer in London town! Looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible on Friday 28 June in the Lord Moon of the Mall from 1800hrs onwards (let me know if you are arriving earlier, I need no other excuse to leave the office early and join you).

Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial

Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial

Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial

From Paul Robinson:

I hope you don’t mind me letting you know about the Lincolnshire Bomber Command Memorial project. It’s the brainchild of the Lord-Lieutenant of Lincolnshire, Mr Tony Worth. Tony has strong family connections with the RAF: his grandfather was ACM Sir Arthur Longmore, an uncle (Wg Cdr Richard Longmore) was killed in action and his father flew Halifaxes. He feels that a central memorial, to honour the effort and sacrifice made by the County’s Bomber Command personnel during WW2, is long overdue: 25,611 of the 55,000 fallen Bomber Command aircrew were lost from Bomber County’s airfields. Having held off until the Green Park Memorial was complete, detailed planning has now begun. We have secured a stunning site high on the ridge between RAF Waddington and Canwick. It overlooks the City of Lincoln and the Cathedral, and is visible from across the City and the surrounding countryside.

The site will become the hub of the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Trail, and have strong connections with the Bomber Command Association, the RAF Museum etc. The Appeal will formally be launched at the East Kirkby Aviation Heritage Centre on 30/31 May this year, under the wing of its Lancaster ‘Just Jane’: we hope to open on the 70th anniversary of the end of the War in Europe (May 2015). Lord Trenchard is the Appeal’s Patron, and the Trustees include Lord Taylor of Holbeach and ACM Sir Stuart Peach (Commander, Joint Forces Command and soon-to-be Vice Chief of the Defence Staff. We have a small Working Group, which I chair, and enthusiastic support from the University of Lincoln, the County and District Councils, and Lincolnshire’s RAF stations.

The aims of the Memorial are:

To honour the 25,611 Bomber Command aircrew who were lost flying from Lincolnshire airfields, and those Bomber Command aircrew from Lincolnshire who flew from bases outside the County.
To recognise the effort and sacrifice made by all who served on Lincolnshire’s wartime Bomber Command bases.
To educate and inform younger generations of the bravery displayed and suffering endured by all sides between 1939 and 1945.

We plan to build an Interpretation/Visitor Centre alongside the Memorial, to provide the ‘educate and inform’ function. The German perspective will be important, especially eye-witness accounts of the horrors of aerial bombardment, and the Lord-Lieutenant and I recently visited Berlin to start this process. A architectural design competition, funded by the Arts Council for England, is under way; and will be followed next month by a public consultation across the County and on the web site.

The site is www.lincsbombercommandmemorial.com, where there is further information, an on-line shop and details of how the project can be supported. Overall, we need to raise in the order of £3M. Fund-raising will begin in earnest after the official launch in May, although we need modest funding to meet expenses until then. More importantly, it’s vital for us to win public awareness and support, so please visit the web site, and spread the word to all your friends and contacts, perhaps by forwarding this email. Oh, all right; a donation would be good, too.

Do let me know if I can give you any more information, or if you’d like to get involved.

Yours, Paul

IV(R) Sqn – Change of Command

OC IV(R) Sqn leads the parade

Kevin Marsh’s tour as OC IV(R) Sqn is coming to an end and his replacement has been announced as Dan Beard, who will take over on 14 June 2013.

The Sqn is hosting a Dining-Out Night at RAF Valley on Friday 19 April and members of the Association have been kindly invited. I will certainly be going if I can get the day off.

[Update]

The cost of the dinner is likely to be £40-£50 for non-subsidised non-mess members. Some accommodation is available. Partners are welcome.

If you are thinking of attending perhaps you could drop me a line using the Contact Form so the Sqn can get a rough idea of numbers.

Harrier Engineer Annual Reunion – 3

From Ade Bushell:

I am happy to report that the “Harrier Engineer Annual Reunion – 3” held in (RAF) Stamford was a roaring success.

Not only was the 4 Squadron Ale the most requested (and the most expensive) but the turnout by ex-4 Sqn linnies was exceptional, follow these links for some photos if you like:-

As you can see, we have all signed a 4 Sqn polo shirt that is going to be “presented” to Taff Evans family when the chance arises.

Gp Capt Peter Gilpin RIP

30th September 1922 – 19th January 2013

Gp Capt Peter William Gilpin CBE DFC has died after a short illness, at the age of 90 and he is survived by his wife, Helen, and family.

Comm’d 19 Jun 42 Gp Capt 1 Jul 65 Ret’d 30 Sep 77

Beloved husband of Helen, adored father of Jan, Mike and James, much loved grandfather and great grandfather.

Funeral service is to take place at St John the Baptist Church, BURFORD at 2 p.m. on 30th January followed by private cremation. Family flowers only, please, but donations for RAF Benevolent Fund or Cancer Research [(enquiries to E Taylor & Son & Son 01993 842421]

[If you wish to contact Helen please email Chris for her address]

Peter Gilpin, unable to go to the RAF College because of the war’s arrival, studied Aeronautical Engineering at Southampton until joining the RAF and was trained in Arizona at Falcon Field, now the Falcon Field airport for Mesa. On return to UK Peter joined 253 Squadron, by then mainly at Hibaldstow and Friston, preparing for operations and the invasion of North Africa to where they deployed from Gibraltar with their Hurricane 11’s to Maison Blanche (French name for the same Arabic meaning, corrupted into Algiers). 253 arrived in Algeria a few days after the Allied landings. The squadron provided air cover for the Army and its supply lines during the Tunisian campaign and its aftermath, moving to Italy in October 1943. In February 1944, 253 arrived in Corsica to undertake escort and anti-shipping missions, returning to Italy in April for similar duties over Yugoslavia. It was at this stage Peter was shot down over Yugoslavia and had already been awarded his DFC. From March 1943 they had Spitfire V’s before the hurricanes finished in Sep43 with the arrival of their Spitfire iX’s. Peter remained as a POW until the end of the war. While at Hucknall and in the Mess at Watnall in 1946, Peter met Helen who served 4 years as a plotter and they were engaged and married within three weeks of meeting each other. 1947 saw him at Manchester UAS and then learning to become a QFI at Rissington and instructing at Dalcross before promotion and returning to South Cerney as a Sqn Ldr.

Peter after his OCU conversions took command of No. IV(AC) Sqn at Jever in August, 1953, still with its Vampire FB5’s and 9’s, and before the arrival of its Sabre F4’s in March 1954. He commanded throughout the Sabre era with IV Sqn until the Sabres’ departure in August 1955, again having the re-equipment, now with Hunter F Mk 4’s, in July 1955, five months before his departure and handover to Sqn Ldr J R (Ray) Chapman. How pleased IV (AC) Sqn was to have them both up as guests at Cottesmore, which I imagine was the 90th Anniversary, with the IV Sqn Hunter remaining there in front of the Sqn until the closing down of Cottesmore, now Kendrick Barracks, but with that Hunter about to become a symbolic and by now a much refurbished “F/GA Mk 9”, as a commemoration of No. 8 Sqn’s long past in the Middle East. 8 Sqn has been now for so long at Waddington with its Sentry AEW AWACS Boeing E-3A’s.

Staff College at Camberley followed, then Shinfield Park Flying Training HQ and becoming Chief Flying Instructor at CFS Little Rissington in 1958-60 followed by Gp Capt Plans in SEAF at Changi then JSSC staff at Latimer. He was promoted Gp Capt in 1965 and became Stn Cdr at RAF Oakington in 1968, on the staff at Camberley Staff College (at dates which are not known to me) and did a long stint as Gp Capt Intelligence at MOD(Air) before his September 1977 retirement to his long term home at delightful Burford in the Cotswolds. Once again our sincere thanks and shared condolences to Mrs Helen Gilpin and their extended family.

Thanks to Alan Pollock for passing on this sad news.
