Happy Four

From Mark Broadbent, writing an article for Classic Aircraft magazine:

As part of my article I want to make reference to the ‘Happy Four’ sobriquet. I was wondering, do you when this term emerged? Is it a post-war thing from the Vampire or Hunter period? Any assistance you could provide would be appreciated.

Anybody know when this term was first used?

Centenary – Transport Arrangements

From The Sqn, more details on Wednesday:

The overall plan is to have 2 x 55 seat buses allowing us to split the number of hotels in half. Although full details can only be calculated once numbers confirmed, a round-robin pick up/drop off should take approximately one hour. Due to the magnitude of this task, I will restrict it to just 6 runs as follows (all times local):

• Pick up from hotels starting at 1700 and dropping off at Officers Mess at 1800 (Friday 21 Sep).

• Pick up from Officers Mess at 2300 and dropping off at hotels by 0000 (Friday 21 Sep).

• Pick up from hotels starting at 1200 and dropping off at the Moran Building at 1300 (Saturday 22 Sep).

• Pick up from Moran Building at 1600 and dropping off at hotels by 1700 (Saturday 22 Sep).

• Pick up from hotels starting at 1800 and dropping off at Officers Mess at 1900 (Saturday 22 Sep).

• Pick up from Officers Mess at 0015 and dropping off at hotels by 0115 (Saturday 22 Sep / early Sunday morning).

I will provide you with detailed pick-up/drop-off times for each hotel once I have the final attendance list.

Security: Members on MT coaches: Personnel on coaches will be checked against a list by the coach driver (plus an Officer on Friday) and allowed on without passes as escorted personnel. We are planning to issue passes/tickets on the coach.

Security: Self-drivers: Friday Meet & Greet: Self-drivers can park at the primary school car park opposite the Officers’ Mess (on the left as you drive towards RAF Valley) and walk 100m to the Mess – this is due to limited parking. The guard will have a full list of names and will let guests on without passes provided they appear on the list and have photo ID.

Security: Saturday Day Event: self-drivers will need to report to the Main Guard Room (MGR) and get car permits and individual passes. The MGR will have a list of names to confirm ID, and whilst these are being prepared they will contact IV Sqn to send an escort down. We will have a team of Officers on hand to “shuttle” guests between MGR and IV Sqn car park throughout the day.

Security: Self-drivers: Saturday Evening: Same as Friday M&G i.e. Self-drivers can park at the primary school car park opposite the Officers’ Mess (on the left as you drive towards RAF Valley) and walk 100m to the Mess – this is due to limited parking. The guard will have a full list of names and will let guests on without passes provided they appear on the list and have photo ID.

Classic Aircraft magazine – Stories Wanted!

Please contact Mark directly if you would like to help.

From Mark Broadbent of Classic Aircraft magazine:

I’ve been commissioned by Classic Aircraft magazine (www.classic-aircraft.net) to write a history of IV Squadron to tie in with the squadron’s centenary. I’m therefore contacting you to request assistance with my research into this piece.

The article would cover the entire 100 years of the unit’s history, but given Classic Aircraft’s focus on the jet age it would focus on the post-1945 period an especially operations with Vampires and Harriers.

I would appreciate being placed in contact with ex-squadron members who are prepared and/or good at talking with the media in order to gain some ‘first-hand’ insights and accounts of interesting stories, events and general life on IV Squadron during its days operating Vampires, Hunters and Harriers.

Any assistance you can provide in terms of information, images and contacts will be very greatly appreciated.

Timings – it is intended to publish the article in November, so ideally I would like to be preparing it from now through to late Sept/early Oct when it will have to written and submitted to meet publishing deadlines.

I can be contacted at mbroadbent85@gmail.com.

Kind regards,

Mark Broadbent

IV Sqn Stained Glass Window

Sqn Stained Glass Window Design

We are now in a position to start raising donations for the Stained Glass Window.

The Stained Glass Window is now being constructed and will be consecrated at a church service at RAF Valley on Sunday 23 September, after the Centenary celebrations. The full cost of the window is £800 and the Association is trying to raise £400 of that. All money raised will be put towards the cost of the window.

If you would like to donate, please use complete an internet transfer to the Four Squadron Association bank account, using the same details that you used to pay for the Centenary weekend (please change the reference to “window”) and we will transfer our combined donation to the Sqn at the end of the donation period (1 Sep 2012).

If you do not have these details, please email me (I’m obviously reluctant to post the bank account details here).

Many thanks for your support,

Chris & the IV Sqn Centenary Committee

    33 Sqn Tempest

A diary report by John Beavin (80Sqn)

© John Beavin PR786/5R-U Tempest F2 33Sqn Gütersloh (ca. 1948) Early recordings from RAF Gütersloh are really rare. In war time Roman numerals were used in the names of the aircraft. Therfore we may define this aircraft as Tempest MkII or F2. From 11/30/1947 until 02/07/1949 33Sqn was based in Gütersloh, apart from two transfers to Lübeck and Gatow in 1948. A story about this special Tempest can be found at: http://www.hawkertempest.se/HinaidiToFritzlar.htm

    Centenary Fishing and Golf

This just in from the Sqn:

Sea Fishing. We have provisionally chartered a boat for a Sea Fishing trip from Holyhead between 0900L and 1200L on Saturday 22 Sep. The cost is £200 and this can be split by up to 10 people (£20 each if all places filled). Please let us know if any of your members would be interested, and we will confirm the booking if desired.
Golf. We have provisionally booked 2 rounds of golf; 4 people tee-off at 1056L and 4 people tee-off at 1101L on Saturday 22 Sep. This can be for 9 or 18 holes, but playing the full course may infringe on timings for the Sqn visit. Cost is £40 per person if playing in groups of 4. If, however, you play in groups of 3 then we have 2 club members willing join you to make up the 4th person in each group, thereby getting discount rates of £20 per person. Please let us know if any of your members would be interested, and once again we will confirm the booking if desired. [Update: All eight places are now just £20 each, so there are now three spare golf slots!]

So far five members have expressed an interest in fishing (five spaces available) and five in golf (three spaces available). Please let me know if you would like to take part in either of these Saturday morning activities so we can finalise numbers and prices.

    Volunteers Required

    Harrier T4 XW269

We’re hoping to get Harrier T4 airframe XW269 to Valley for the Centenary. It’s been lovingly rebuilt by Mike Spiers’s team at Selby and is in the process of moving to the Caernarfon Air Museum.

    Harrier T4 XW269 Dismantled

If we get it (big if), it will probably arrive on Friday afternoon (21 Sep) and leave on Sunday afternoon (23 Sep). It will be transported on a flat-loader of some kind, and it is moved in four parts. The driver will be an ex-Harrier airframe mechanic who knows how to put the four pieces together, but he will need some help.

Any volunteers to help put together XW269 on 21 Sep and dismantle it again on 23 Sep? Please let me know:
